A paint on bed liner saves you a pile of money compared to a professional spray on bedliner. It’s a great choice especially for an older truck in sad need of help. My sons and I just installed a bed liner on our old truck and here are 7 tricks we discovered in the process.
Trick 1 – Save Money
You’ll save compared to a spray on liner because you do the work. A professional liner uses a different kind of material. It’s much thicker than what you can get. But for many uses a bed liner you put on works just about as well and for a lot less money spray on bedliner.
Trick 2 – Gather The Supplies
You’ll need truck bed paint plus a roller or brush for application. Then you’ll need cleaning supplies to get the bed clean. Use a regular car grease and wax remover. You’ll need sandpaper too. Finally, get masking tape to protect unpainted areas.
Trick 3 – Get The Right Paint
The major brands of paint for truck beds are Herculiner, PlastiKote and Duplicolor. Each paint is similar, but a bit different. For example, Herculiner contains larger texture pieces and looks thicker. Plus it comes in several colors other than black. We used Plasti-Kote and like the way it works.
Trick 4 – An Extra Quart
A gallon of paint isn’t quite enough for a truck. You’ll need at least 5 quarts and the more the better. Professional liners contain 3 to 4 gallons. Make sure to get at least 5 quarts.
Trick 5 – Rough Up The Bed
Paint sticks best to a roughed up surface. Be aggressive with the sandpaper so you get good sticking. Take the time to do preparation right and the paint application is a snap.
Trick 6 – Rollers Work
You can spray on a liner too. Just follow the paint manufacturer’s recommendations for spray nozzles. The trick is that a roller applied coating looks like it was sprayed on. You can’t tell the difference.
Trick 7 – A Kit?
Herculiner sells a kit that contains all the pieces you need to apply a finish. That’s an easy way to get everything at one time and avoid having to shop around. Save time and money with a bed liner kit.
Based on our experience we recommend a paint on bed liner. It’s an especially good choice for an older truck that needs some work. The bed liner will improve the looks of your truck and add some bed protection at the same time. There are several other details you should consider.
